Shoulder & Arm Pain

Assessment and personalised care to help reduce pain, restore movement
and improve confidence in everyday activity, work and sport.

Understanding Shoulder and Arm Pain

The shoulder provides more movement than any other joint in the body.
It allows flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation
and external rotation. This wide range of movement is useful, but it
can also make the shoulder more vulnerable to injury and instability.

The shoulder joint is supported by the rotator cuff muscles, the joint
capsule and the muscles controlling the shoulder blade. Injury to any
of these structures may cause pain, weakness, restricted movement or
difficulty completing normal activities.

A thorough orthopaedic assessment should consider the shoulder joint,
rotator cuff, shoulder blade mechanics and thoracic spine. This helps
identify the structures involved, assess the severity of the injury and
guide an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Common Causes

  • ✓ Falling onto an outstretched hand
  • ✓ Direct impact to the shoulder
  • ✓ Repeated overhead movements
  • ✓ Stretching beyond the shoulder’s normal limits
  • ✓ Poor lifting or exercise technique
  • ✓ Overuse and repetitive strain

Common Symptoms

  • ✓ Sharp or deep shoulder pain
  • ✓ Catching, popping or locking
  • ✓ Weakness during normal movement
  • ✓ Swelling around the shoulder or upper arm
  • ✓ Pain at night or when lying on the shoulder
  • ✓ Difficulty lifting or reaching overhead

Conditions Associated With Shoulder and Arm Pain

SLAP lesions
Rotator cuff tears
Rotator cuff strains
Subacromial impingement
Acromioclavicular joint injuries
Clavicle fractures

How Shoulder Pain Can Affect Daily Life

Difficulty participating in sport or exercise
Disturbed sleep due to pain
Difficulty lifting light objects
Pain when reaching overhead or behind the back
Weakness during work or household activities
Overuse of the opposite arm causing compensatory pain

A Thorough Shoulder Assessment

A detailed shoulder, scapular and thoracic spine assessment can help
identify the source of your symptoms and guide an appropriate treatment
and rehabilitation plan.
